CHAPTER SEVEN

ALL RIGHT, COLLEEN TOLD herself as they walked back to the B and B, it was hard to be angry with a man determined to be kind. And particularly hard when her attraction to him was growing by leaps and bounds despite his obstinate nature.

They stopped at the corner of School and Main Streets as light traffic sped past. The wind seemed to have picked up even more, and the sky had turned to a menacing pewter color. The air was cold and sharp and vaguely reminiscent of the winter Colleen thought was behind them.

“Do you smell snow?” she asked Mike.

He caught her hand and hurried her across the street when there was a break in the traffic. “I can never smell it,” he said, pointing to a clothing shop on the corner. “I always have to wait until it falls to know it’s coming. I’m a city boy, remember. Let’s stop in here.”

“This is no time to go shopping,” she argued halfheartedly. “We should be hurrying home.”

He pulled her to a table near the counter where the bust of a mannequin wore a soft pink scarf and matching fuzzy earmuffs. A pair of gloves were crossed on the table in front of her. He took the earmuffs off the mannequin’s head and put them on Colleen. Then he did the same with the scarf.

“Warmer?” he asked.

She couldn’t deny that the earmuffs did warm her ears, which were stinging with the unexpected bite in the air.

“Yes,” she said.

A clerk approached, glasses hanging from a chain around her neck. “May I help you?”

Mike handed Colleen the gloves and pulled out his wallet. “We’ll take the set.”

“I don’t need the scarf,” Colleen said. “I have...”

“And I promised to replace the sweater Chewie ruined.” Mike looked around him and spotted a table of sweaters across the room. He handed the clerk his credit card, then caught Colleen’s arm and drew her toward the sweaters. Beyond the large display window, snow began to drift down in large, fluffy flakes.

“Mike, it’s snowing!” Colleen pointed to the window, stating the obvious.

He nodded. “Yes, I recognize it. The kids and the pets are home and safe, and you and I are on an adventure. Pick out a sweater. It was a sort of mossy green, as I recall.”

She turned to tell him she’d washed it in the bathroom sink, and with a few stitches, it was going to be fine. But he was looking through a table of children’s things and she’d lost his attention.

After a quick search, she found a simple turtleneck in the right color and took it to the counter. The clerk was helping him with hats and mittens for the girls and came back to the counter, a brightly colored set in each hand—one dark blue and covered in a yellow star pattern, the other light blue with white snowflakes.

“My girls weren’t prepared for this weather,” he said as the clerk rang up his purchases. “Do the boys need anything?”

She shook her head.
